Beautiful (2013)

I'm uploading this one quiiiiiite late. Last year, in Art at school, one of the topics was "Unveiling the Feminine" and for our pieces we had to respond the an issue facing females. This was my work. The spinner is functioning (ie you can spin it around). The spinner parts read shy, controlled, sexy,  vulnerable, confident, wild and conservative.

Artist's Statement:

My piece is based on what I believe to be true feminine beauty: realness and naturalness of character. In popular culture we are often told that if you are strong, you are beautiful. Other things tell us that if you are vulnerable you are beautiful. It is my belief that women can be both of these things and that is truly beautiful. We are not 2D figures with set ways;  we are changing and fluid. The spinner on the face of my girl tells this story. She can be any one of those words which is really just a snapshot or example of the many different things women can be at different times or all at once. The word “Beautiful” is above the whole spinner, meaning whatever it lands on, beauty can be seen in the reality of that emotion or trait. The messiness and freeness of the girl’s hair extends that message that our imperfection and uncontrollability is gorgeous. The colours of the hair are a symbolic nod towards femininity as well as the flowers and spray paint colour. This girl, the everywoman, change can. We all change. We are not a single trait.
